It has been said that balance is the key to happiness.
So how does that come into play when one has an affinity towards microbrews while also feeling the constant tug for family time? Chugging down your favorite IPA in between tea parties and batting practice doesn’t feel like balance, let alone happiness. The days of bar crawl followed by late nights may be a rarity now as you routinely tote the young ones from activity to activity. The good old days must be gone…Or are they?
Nope. They don’t have to be.
Day trips to some of Virginias finest Breweries don’t have to necessitate the need for a babysitter. Here are six of our favorite Kid Friendly breweries in Virginia that can make for fun day trips this fall.
Fairwinds Brewing Company
Located just south of the beltway in Lorton, VA, Fairwinds sports 14 different beers, nine which are seasonal and limited. Featuring food truck services 7 days a week, the theme changes daily and compliment the beers on tap. Open for 4 years now, the 13,000 square foot facility has had its own packaging department on-site alongside the taproom and is a Veteran owned business.
With hurricane season upon us, the Howling Gale West-coast style IPA with its citrus aromas and flavors is worth the drive. https://fairwindsbrewing.com/
Old Bust Head Brewery
Perched amongst the rolling hills of Fauquier County, Virginia, Old Bust Head brings a unique style to the brewery business, about as unique as the fabled stories behind its name. Come join in the fun with a tour of the brewery Weds-Sun.
Try some edgy eats with your beer at the rotating bevy of food trucks. On top of everything else, Old Bust Head boasts an environmentally conscious establishment kids can learn from with a focus on saving energy, conserving resources, and maximizing sustainability in the area. https://www.oldbusthead.com/
Old Ox Brewery
Old Ox Brewery and it’s two locations (Ashburn & Middleburg) make you feel like part of the family with a friendly atmosphere and themed events. Family-owned and operated since 2014, the 30-barrel brewhouse produces nearly 8,000 barrels a year… that’s 930 gallons of beer per batch.
Even Fido can join in the fun as dogs are permitted on the grounds and patio, just not in the brewery. Old Ox partners with local restaurants and food trucks to complement their wide variety of tasty beers. Come by for a taste testing Tues – Sun at the scheduled times. https://www.oldoxbrewery.com/
Port City Brewing Company
This historically located brewery sits in the middle of Alexandria, a stone’s throw from the Holmes Run Stream. Port City strives for sustainability and has various green initiatives in place to help maintain that vision.
Shhhhhh. Don’t tell anyone, but this brewery has a secret weapon, it’s called Hopzooka. This device allows the brewers to add hops without exposing the fermenting brew to oxygen. What does that mean to you the consumer? It means a fresher better beer with a longer-lasting hop character. https://www.portcitybrewing.com/
Vanish Farmwood’s Brewery
Located on 54 acres near Leesburg Virginia, Vanish Farmwood’s utilizes local ingredients and declares that they “focus on bringing you a beer that is planted to pint and seed to sip.” That sounds super fresh!
The taproom has at least 20 beers available each day while the open space outdoors is great for a picnic or other family outdoor activities. Try the Mega Flight of 12 tasters to get a flavor of what Vanish is all about. https://vanishbeer.com/
Barrel Oak Winery
Not just wine. This is a winery and a brewery. Established as a winery, the Barrel Oak Farm Taphouse gives beer enthusiasts a chance to taste some hand-crafted beers made on the premises alongside the wines of the 11-year-old establishment.
Barrel Oak is friendly towards our four-legged friends and welcomes you to bring them along with the family. Come to hike, bike, or just relax with a glass or mug in hand. http://www.barreloak.com/
