You’ve noticed each other on the Metro, and then found out you work in the same building. You love the way he makes that face when his glasses fall down on his nose. You love the way she always has a pencil stuck in her hair. Maybe he is on the opposite end of the political spectrum, but you just can’t resist. You take the plunge and ask her out. She said yes! Now what?
You thought the hardest part of getting together would be asking for the date in the first place. Nope. Now you’ve got to come up with a plan that will wow. But where should you go that’s not played out or too sincere or too crowded or ….
Relax. We’ve got this. Here are some great ideas for date night in DC, no matter what kind of couple you are (or aspire to be).
Romantic Date: For a gorgeous setting for romance, the place to be is Marcel’s by Robert Wiedmaier. This French-Flemish inspired restaurant is an award-winning choice with a pre-theater menu to die for. Then move next door to the spectacular Kennedy Center for a show. A musical is always fun, but if you want to really wow your date, consider the Washington National Opera to show your sophisticated side. Stroll hand in hand on the balcony overlook during intermission, then return for Act Two. Head down to the Watergate and get a nightcap and dessert at the gorgeous The Next Whiskey Bar. What an unforgettable night.
Fun Date: Start off your evening with a visit to Jaleo, Jose Andres classic tapas restaurant. Visit the Bethesda location for dinner, so that you can hop on over to Glen Echo Park’s Spanish Ballroom for dancing; whether salsa, swing, or tango, you’ll love the live music, and the energy of the crowd. All of the dance nights include an introductory lesson, so even if you have two left feet, you’ll be able to pick up the basics. Then head over to Silver’s art deco bar to catch your breath over a nightcap or share a late-night breakfast after all that dancing!
Adventurous Date: Looking for a full day of play? Head over to Rock Creek Park and take your pick from all of the incredible choices like horseback riding, tennis, golf, kayaks, canoes, or hiking. Take a picnic and make a day of it, then sneak a kiss in the planetarium. When you’re ready to grab some dinner, head over to Chinatown and choose from some of the great casual restaurants like Nando’s Peri-Peri or Beef N Bread or stop in at China Boy for the best noodles in the District. Then head over to the Black Cat to hear a band, play pinball, or just chill in the Red Room Bar.
Quintessentially DC Date: Everyone knows when you live in the District you never do any of the touristy things here, so it’s time to up your skill level. Instead of the traditional museums, head out to The National Arboretum and wander the incredible gardens and landscapes there. For lunch? Where else but Ben’s Chili Bowl , a DC obsession for almost 60 years. Take a walking tour of DC with DC Design Tours and learn about architecture, urban planning, and design in the District. Drinks at Old Ebbitt Grill, a DC tradition since 1856, then stroll by the White House and take a selfie. Head over to Nationals Park in time to take in a game and pull for your favorite President during the fourth inning race. Want to top off the night with the best view of DC? Stop at the W hotel and have a nightcap at POV Rooftop Lounge and Terrace and see if you can point out all of the places you went that day.
