It’s summer. Congressmen are packing up and heading home.  Family and friends are headed to the Outer Banks or Ocean City.  If you’re a regular working stiff still grinding away in the office, it might seem like the summer is passing you by.

Never fear, we’ve compiled a list of the 10 best places in the district for cheap (but good quality) drinks with outdoor patios so you can also enjoy some outdoor fun without paying high DC prices.

The Red Derby  3718 14th St. NW

With over 100 beers to choose from, a scenic rooftop bar (with plenty of seating), and happy hour till 8pm…what’s not to love? Happy hour runs seven days a week and  ALL NIGHT on Thursdays. Opens at 5 pm M-F and at 11 am on the weekends for brunch. Mimosas and brunch drinks are only $3.

The Big Hunt  1345 Connecticut Ave NW

One of DC’s oldest bars in a prime location, so you know it has plenty of atmosphere! The Big Hunt features a covered outdoor patio, $4 Happy Hour drink specials, and reasonably priced food.  Every night is a different special. Check out ½ price hamburgers on Wednesdays. The Big Hunt doubles as a comedy club. The shows are free some nights! It gets packed, so get there early.

Ivy and Coney  1537 7th St. NW

Are you from the Midwest and miss cheap old-style beer and Chicago style dogs?  If so, this is your place. It’s a dive bar for sure, but with a lovely rooftop patio and a cold PBR for $3, you can’t go wrong. Great place to catch a Cubs or Nationals game and meet new friends. Bring plenty of cash as they do not accept plastic.

    Madhatter  1319 Connecticut Ave NW

If you’re looking for a boozy brunch…you’ve found it.  Madhatter’s is famous for their bottomless mimosas and all you can drink champagne for only $14.  The vibe is definitely “party time.” The décor is cute, and there is a beautiful outdoor patio for dining.  After work, check out the happy hour specials. Most drinks are $5.

    Archipelago   1201 U St. NW

Your friends may all be at the ocean, but you don’t have to miss out on a beachy atmosphere right here in the concrete jungle. With the tiki-style drinks and tropical decor, you’ll feel like you hopped a plane to Honolulu…without the hefty price. Their Pina Coladas get rave reviews! The libations are a tad more expensive here but are very high quality and well worth the price. Their cozy patio and pleasant atmosphere make this a must for summer fun!

    NERO   1323 Connecticut AVE NW

For a place with a little more class (or date night), consider NERO. The interior is intimate, chic, and the drinks are strong. Happy hour is from 4-7 pm nightly with drink and food specials. An excellent wine bar and music round out an enchanting evening at a great price right in Dupont Circle. There is outdoor patio seating.

    Proper 21  1319 F St. NW

Charming outdoor seating with a clean, updated sports bar feel. Not your typical bar fare. Try the truffle fries or the salted caramel ice cream on a fried waffle. Brunch features $20 bottomless mimosas.  For DC, the prices are inexpensive. Lots of TVs to watch your favorite game.

Morris American Bar  1020 7th St. NW

If you’re looking for something a little more upscale, yet reasonably priced—this is a good choice. Finely crafted, specialty cocktails are $11 at happy hour. Conveniently located next to the convention center. With its speakeasy atmosphere you’ll want to try the “Stolen Property,” a mix of Jamaican rum, lemon, Kalua, maraschino liqueur, and strawberries. There is a cozy outdoor seating area.

    Duke’s Counter   3000 Connecticut Ave NW  #J

Right next to the National Zoo, Duke’s serves the best hamburger in town!  Just read the reviews if you don’t believe us. It has a great little scenic street-side patio for people watching.  After taking the kids to see the pandas, this is the place for adults to unwind with a good beer selection and full bar without breaking the bank.

Author Charles F. Glassman once stated that “Making the best of what we do have, instead of begrudging what we don’t, has a way of creating all that we’ll ever need.”

This summer, create your own oasis here at home for an hour or two at a time at one of our choices for the best-priced drinks with outdoor seating in town!
