Things to Do in Washington DC in December

    Baby, it’s cold out there! Welcome to December, a month-long celebration of holidays. Christmas is the 25th, Hanukkah starts the 22nd, and Kwanzaa starts the 26th.

    Just a warning, if you have a little Scrooge in you, it will be hard to avoid the myriad of holiday-themed activities on tap this year. As usual Washington DC offers something for everyone.

    So let’s embrace the spirit of the season and plan to attend some of the many events here in Washington, DC. Here are some of our favorites:

     

    The Illusionists- Magic of The Holidays  Dec 3 – 8  $54 – $114

    The magic of old St. Nick hasn’t got anything on the amazing illusionists performing on stage for the Magic of The Holidays showcase. This group of illusionists has been breaking box office records around the world, and now they bring their stunning talents here to D.C.

    The show features non-stop highbrow magic that is sure to thrill and boasts to be “the most outrageous and astonishing acts ever seen on stage.” This family-friendly show runs a bit over 2 hours.

    D.C. Holiday Cheers Fest Dec 5 $35

    Calling all adults! Have we got an event for you! If you like to party and can stomach the ugly sweater attire, check out this year’s D.C. Holiday Cheers Fest.

    This bar crawl will take you to specially selected bars that will be offering a variety of unique beer and wine. Grab your ugliest sweater and drinking buddies and head downtown to start December right.

    Price doesn’t include food or drink so plan accordingly for this fun night out.

    Brewlights at Zoolights Dec 12 $55 – $65

    We can’t guarantee you’ll see any reindeer, but this year’s Brewlights at Zoolights event at the National Zoo is sure to stir up the party animal in you.

    Enjoy craft beers and microbrews from a dozen breweries while being immersed in the festive glow of holiday lights from 6 – 9 pm. There will be tasty complimentary snacks as well, for you–not the monkeys. There is even a souvenir light-up cup to take home.

    The event lives on well after the lights have been turned off as each ticket purchased shows support for the amazing work of the Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute. This is an adult event so get a sitter and come out for an event that’s a walk on the wild side.

    The Holiday Show Dec 14  $25 – $65

    Get ready for an outstanding evening of entertainment as the Gay Men’s Chorus of Washington, D.C. presents their annual holiday extravaganza. If you like glitter, glitz, and glamour along with holiday-themed music, this event was built for you.

    Expect the unexpected and have a blast at this year’s show which will be bigger and better than ever. The chorus has been preparing for months and will enchant with favorite songs like “The Twelve Days of Christmas,” “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year,” “O Come, All Ye Faithful,” “Dear Santa,” and “What a Gay O’l Christmas Tree.”

    Holiday Lights Run 2019 Dec 17   6 – 10pm $20

    Running shoes, check! Ugly sweater, check! Capacity for fun, check! Sounds like you’re ready to rock & roll in this year’s Holiday Lights Run.

    The festive course will take you along 4.2 miles of holiday lights and cheer. All participants will receive a pair of Wrightsocks and a red wristband to be collected after the race as part of a raffle.

    It’s highly encouraged that participants bring a new unwrapped toy for a child between 3 and 13 years old. The toys will be donated to the Salvation Army Angel Tree program.

    The after-event party is at Mackey’s Irish Pub where participants can relax and enjoy the entire downstairs and bar. It’s a great opportunity to keep up with your fitness goals in a holiday atmosphere with an opportunity to give back.

     Hot in Herre Holiday Spectacular Dec 20, 9 pm $16

    The club scene meets the holidays at the 9:30 Club five days before Christmas. If you’ve still got shopping to do, fret not, you can still get it done since this dance party begins when the stores close.

    It will be wall to wall bass-thumping fun! Celebrate the music of the 2000s with DJs Will Eastman and Ozker, and visuals by industry standout Kylos.

    So, get ready for a healthy dose of Usher, Rhianna, and The Black Eyed Peas and be prepared to dance the night away at the Hot in Herre Holiday Spectacular.

    Trans-Siberian Orchestra Dec 23 $49+

    Festival of Laughs Dec 30 $18

    On the last night of Hanukkah, comedian Jessica Kirson brings her potent, memorable comedy back to the D.C. Improv. You may know Jessica’s comedic stylings from her appearances on Comedy Central and The Tonight Show.

    Jessica won’t be alone as she joined by distinguished guests and fellow headliners Adam Ray and Josh Adam Meyers.

    This is an amazing night of comedy for such a reasonable cost, you’ll have no excuse not tip your waiter. Come out, relax, laugh, and laugh some more at this high-octane night of comedy.
